National Pollution Control Day [Benefits,Theme]

National Pollution Control Day 2021 is observed annually on December 2 to remember the people who lost lives during 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Pollution control is a major environmental issue that is faced by humans living in this modern world. Every year, National Pollution Control Day is observed to increase awareness about the environment and pollution. When it comes to air pollution, water pollution and soil contamination; there has been a rise in such cases around the globe.

World Health Organization (WHO) defines environmental degradation as: “The degradation of the environment by people. It includes the depletion of natural resources, contamination of land, water and air, loss of ecosystems and decline in biodiversity.”

The major pollutant gases that are emitted into the air are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These gases are known as greenhouse gases and they trap heat within the Earth’s atmosphere. This increase in temperature is known as global warming. When it comes to pollution control, everyone needs to take small steps in their everyday lives to reduce environmental pollution. National Pollution Control Day is a good reminder for all of us to do our part in making a difference for our planet!

Some simple ways you can reduce pollution are:

• Use public transportation, carpool or walk whenever you can to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

• Plant trees around your house to improve air quality by removing harmful pollutants from the environment. Even if one tree’s roots are able to absorb 60 pounds of CO2 each year, imagine how much pollution would be reduced worldwide if every home with a yard had a tree!

• Avoid using pesticides and chemical fertilizers when gardening because they pollute our waterways when washed away by rainwater. Instead, use natural pesticides such as diatomaceous earth and neem oil. These substances only kill the bad bugs without poisoning water supplies.

Environmental degradation is the deterioration of our environment leading to a loss of resources and biodiversity that is also affecting human health and welfare. A lack of natural resources, destruction of habitats and accelerating rates of extinction directly impact on ecosystem functions and services and their ability to meet human needs (WWF). Pollution control refers to the regulation of polluting activities for waste management purposes.

Most environmental laws are passed with the goal of controlling pollution, protecting the natural environment, conserving natural resources including wildlife, soil, air, water etc. The best way to protect nature is by enforcing strict rules against pollution so as all sorts of harmful wastes should be handled in an appropriate manner while recycling used products whenever possible. It’s crucial to take small steps to reduce pollution in our everyday lives as this will help to make a difference for our planet!
